christmas-crush_med

Will Ashley spend Christmas with Craig or her bitter memories?

Blurb:

Although Ashley Wagner feels more like Scrooge than Santa, she keeps her promise and accompanies her sister back home for a Christmas wedding. Her three-day weekend is off to a rocky start, thanks to the unexpected run-in with her womanizing ex-husband, and his very pregnant new wife. She manages to get away with her dignity intact, but later, with old wounds ripped open, the professional crisis manager ends up in the middle of her own life-altering predicament.

Then, sports journalist Craig Johnston, wheels to her rescue.

Will Ashley spend Christmas brooding over bitter memories? Or will Craig, a dynamic paraplegic, present the deserving divorcée with a gift she can’t resist?

Scene: Ashley meets her rescuer, Craig, face to face.

Excerpt:

“I’m Ashley Wagner.” She extended her hands to him. “I believe you’re the one I should thank for being so kind to me this morning.”

Taking her outstretched hands, Craig looked at her. No longer in a rush, he took time to analyze Ashley. A feeling, akin to this morning’s enchantment, zapped him. “Are you all right?”

At that point, Ashley’s action mystified him. Craig watched her close her eyes. But, she never removed her hands from his fingers.

“Ask me that question again,” she urged.

Baffled, he obliged. “Are you all right?”

“That voice.” Her eyes reopened. They seemed to shower him with a joyful gaze. “I would recognize that chivalrous rumble anywhere.” Ashley squeezed his hands as if to impart power to her gratitude. “It is you.”

New Year, New Traditions By Elaine Calloway

Elaine Calloway is visiting today with her Southern Ghosts Series book one No Grits No Glory!

I have to tell you guys I have just finished this book this week. I read it in one day. I literally could not put the book down, my phone died twice in the process (I read books on my phone). I loved the characters, they had me rooting for the good guys to win and wanting to punch the bad guys in the face. At first I hated Mrs Virginia Grayson thinking she was a stuck up woman but as the story progressed who really wouldn’t love a ghost that starts to clean your house 🙂 Even though this story was a bit suspenseful and serious, it had me laughing out loud at points … especially Mrs. Grayson and her “Yankee Woman” comments. I highly recommend this book but with one warning — make sure you have lots of time when you start reading, you will not be able to put it down. I’m off to read book two in the series 🙂

Take it away, Elaine.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Ah, yes. It’s that time again. Resolutions. Goals. Dreams. The beginning of something new. What’s in store for us? Do you want to read a certain number of books in 2017? Finish that novel that’s been gathering dust? Get in shape or quit smoking? Travel more?

Before overwhelm starts to set in, remember that a new year is a great new beginning. A chance to gain a fresh perspective. This year, whether you’re an avid reader or a writer, do something today to stretch your mind. Take a different route to the store. Look closely at a photograph; notice the texture and colors. Even something simple like a tree in winter can have its own kind of beauty if we take the time to look.

tree

Creativity loves variety. New ways of doing things sharpen the mind and keep our brains alert so we can read 100 books in a year or write more manuscripts.

Sometimes, just like the characters we create in our books, we don’t embrace the New Year but we go kicking and screaming into it. That’s okay. Life has a way of guiding us to where we should be.

In my first Southern Ghosts Series book, No Grits No Glory, the main character from Boston moves down South to get away from the paranormal elements of her life—only to find her new home is haunted by Southern ghosts. She is trying to change her path, but external forces won’t let her off the hook so easily. In the book, she’s thrust into a murder mystery that will risk her job, her home, but especially her life. (And she has some annoying ghosts in her home 24/7, which adds some humor to the book!)

Get the first book, No Grits No Glory, here.

As we go into 2017, whether you’re embracing or avoiding another new year, try to see things in a new way. Your brain will love you for it.

Sex, Scandal and the Sheriff by Kryssie Fortune

Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!! Kryssie Fortune is visiting today with her book Sex, Scandal and the Sheriff! Take it away, Kryssie.

* * *

Could YOU hack it as a Navy Seal?

us_navy_seals_insignia-1

A former military man who’d been the best of the best sounded dashing and romantic. Also, I love the ocean. No wonder I made my hero of Sex, Scandal, and the Sheriff a former Seal. Sean Mathews had wanted to be one since the day he made the school swim team. He managed it too, but since a bullet wound cost him his speed in the water, he’s left the service and become the sheriff of Westhorpe Ridge.

That got me thinking. Sean Mathews had been captain of his high school swim squad and had run in triathlons. No wonder the ladies loved him. And Sean? He loved them right back. But how did he go from being a natural athlete to a SEAL.

First, he’d have spoken to a navy recruiter, and because he’d done his research, he’d have asked for a SEAL Challenge contract. This meant, that once he joined the navy, he was eligible for extra benefits and bonuses. Even if Sean hadn’t got the Challenge contract, he’d have enlisted and volunteered to take a physical screening test during the first week of basic training. After that, a Naval Special Operations Motivator would have interviewed him, and if he’d passed that, the Motivator would have recommended he enter the Naval Special Warfare  (BUD/S) training pipeline.

As an eighteen-year-old high school graduate without any convictions, Sean wouldn’t have struggled with the interview. Teamwork came easy to him, but whenever he needed to step up and take charge, he would.

He’d have probably found the physical test easy too. Me… I’d be crying and begging to stop before I finished the first part.

Here’s what Sean would have to achieve. Of course, he came out top of his induction group.

Navy SEAL PST Standards

PST Event Minimum Standards Competitive Standards
500 Yard Swim 12:30 8 Minutes
Pushups 50 80-100
Sit-ups 50 80-100
Pull-ups 10 15-20
1.5 Mile Timed Run 10:30 9-10 Minutes

The best SEALs ignore the minimum standards and aim for the competitive standards. It helps them get through the BUD/S training.

That means swimming at an average speed of over 2 miles per hour for 8 minutes..

How many pushups can you do?

Sean had two minutes to do 80-100. After that he had to do 80-100 pushups in 2 minutes. Then he’d move on to pull-ups. Again, this would kill me, but he had to 15/20 in 2 minutes.

One he’d managed that lot, he had to run for 9-10 minutes at around 10 miles an hour.

Having read all this, I think Navy Seals are Supermen.

If you’d like to know how Sean found romance, then please check out my stand-alone romance within my Heroes of Westhorpe Ridge Series, Sex Scandal and the Sheriff.

When she turns up in Westhorpe Ridge, he tries everything to make her leave town. Despite their misunderstandings, though, they can’t keep their hands off each other.

As Year’s Eve looms, the spy ring resurfaces. Jazz will need all of Sean’s SEAL prowess to survive. But because his wounded leg cost him his speed in the water, will it be enough?

Excerpt

Once Jazz had fulfilled her obligations to Star Magazine and banked their check, she tidied the odds and ends of her life. Finally, three days before Christmas, she loaded her life into her five-year-old car. Her last night in the apartment passed in a blur, and three hours before dawn, she set out to build a new future in the small North Carolina coastal town of Westhorpe Ridge.

“New start. New life. New ambitions,” she told herself as she drove away from her dream of being a teacher.

By the time the winter sun crept over the horizon, she’d passed the halfway point between Washington and Westhorpe Ridge. She made good time, but fifteen minutes from her destination, the car handling changed. Praying nothing expensive had happened to her trusty vehicle, she pulled over to take a look. She got out the car, walked around to the rear passenger side, and sighed when she realized the tire had blown out. Damn, my spare’s in the trunk, beneath my suitcases and bedding. Shaking her head, she heaved her first suitcase onto the grass verge. It hadn’t felt so heavy when she’d packed it.

A police car pulled up. “Sheriff Mathews, ma’am. Can I be of assistance?”

His voice flowed over her like molasses, rich, thick, and so sweet she wanted to taste its owner. Instead, she panted slightly but kept moving. “I’ve had a blowout, but my spare tire’s under all my stuff. Don’t worry. I can manage, thank you.”

When she turned back to the car, Jazz’s eyes widened. The man in the uniform looked enormous, blond, and way too familiar. Handsome didn’t come close. In his long-sleeved fawn shirt and standard-issue brown trousers, he looked like a sex god come to earth. And are those handcuffs dangling from his belt? I can find a way to put them to good use.

Given their history, drooling over him felt wrong. Despite what the doctors had told her, traces of the spies’ lust drug must still linger in her system. Her heart beat faster and her pussy grew damp. Even breathing seemed hard around him. “Ethan Mathews? I thought you were a scientist involved in some hush-hush stuff, not a sheriff. Why are you in Westhorpe Ridge? I thought you were some high-flying scientist. And isn’t impersonating a police officer a criminal offense? Shit, you’re driving a real police car. Are you really a sheriff?”

He did a double take, glowered right back at her. “Jazz Stewart? What the hell are you doing here? Have you jumped bail? Keep your hands where I can see them while I radio in and run a check on you.”

Jazz shivered despite the winter sunshine. Everyone except the CIA had made her out to be the bad guy, her former employer included. The damn sheriff was treating her like a criminal, but he’d been at that damn party too. Judging by the way he’d climbing on his high horse, he probably believed everything he’d read about her in the papers. Out of everyone she knew, she’d wanted the man she’d been dreaming about since the soiree to be on her side. He’s even sexier than I remembered, but what’s with this running a check on me? Surely he knows the truth by now. She hated the way he smirked at her, but she couldn’t resist taunting him. “So, Sheriff, spanked any other females lately?”

SEAN MATHEWS STARED at the woman he’d been fantasizing over since he’d arrived home in Westhorpe Ridge. In her worn jeans and figure-hugging T-shirt, she tempted him like a modern-day Mata Hari. After the dreadful soiree, he’d never expected to see her again.

It had taken a long, unpleasant interview with the CIA to convince them he’d only been hungry when he posed as his brother, Ethan. It hadn’t helped that the CIA kept tabs on his brother because he headed up a top-secret research team. Once Sean convinced them he hadn’t had an ulterior motive for turning up at the soiree, they’d warned him not to impersonate his brother again and let him go.

Coming home had never felt so good, except every time he closed his eyes, memories of Jazz’s honey-hued hair and aquamarine eyes invaded his dreams. He’d do anything to get Jazz Stewart out of his head, but he wished he’d stripped her slowly and seduced her. Spanking her had been as necessary as breathing. So had screwing her afterward, but later he’d learned about the spies using the soiree to collect state secrets. Last time they’d met, he’d brought her to orgasm. Now she stood beside her blown-out tire and taunted him.

His radio crackled, and his deputy told him Jazz Stewart was clean. There were no warrants out for her arrest, and she’d never so much as had a parking fine. He felt like an idiot for second-guessing the CIA, but she was the last woman he’d expected to see in North Carolina. And why was she heading toward his hometown of Westhorpe Ridge? His heart had leaped when he saw her, but his gut told him not to trust her.

Back at the soiree, the way she’d gathered up her clothes and run had left him eager to see her again. Women usually clung on until he called a halt to any relationship between them. If he could go back and change the way things had ended, he would, but he’d still have talked to Jazz at the soiree.

In hindsight, he should stay away from her, but she’d drawn him like a magnet, or maybe a Venus flytrap. His common sense told him to keep his distance, but he’d always been a sucker for forbidden fruit. When she’d stormed off to find her roommate, she’d certainly brought him back to earth with a bang. If he’d really been Ethan, he’d have let her seduce him and loved every minute of it. His brother had trouble getting dates, what with his top-secret schedule and the way his mind worked ten times faster than everyone else’s.

Sean hated the way Jazz had feigned unease as a ruse to pull him into her web. As a former SEAL, he should have seen through her act, but he’d fallen under the spell of a woman who he still suspected had plotted against his country. At least he hadn’t known anything classified to tell her.

Getting back into his sheriff’s uniform had grounded him and helped him suppress his longings for a woman he thought he never wanted to see again—except in his fantasies, of course.

He pictured her, hands on the car roof, legs spread. His hand trembled as he ran it over his mouth. In his imagination, he lifted her skirt, spread her legs wider, and fingered her clit, or better yet, ran his tongue across. He hoped she tasted as sweet as she looked. Once she’d come, he’d thumb her nipples and kiss the back of her neck until she begged him to fuck her. Damn, he needed to stop thinking about her like that and concentrate on the here and now.

So much for my unflappable professional persona. He hated the way she made his cock stand to attention. He wanted nothing to do with a traitor like her, but giving her ass another spanking sounded better by the minute.

He fell back and heaved a second suitcase from the trunk. Handcuffing her and doing a body search tempted him so much his balls ached. While he’d never abuse his authority that way, he would stay cold and impersonal if it killed him. “All clear, ma’am. Do you need any help with the tire, ma’am?”

She gave him a look guaranteed to freeze his blood and sat on the banking beside her cases, doing her best impression of a pampered southern belle. Fanning herself with a piece of paper, she sighed. “All that effort and stress has left me quite weak. I’ll sit here and recover while my hero changes my tire.”

Perfectly Christmas by Linda O’Connor

Linda O’Connor is here today with her latest release Perfectly Christmas. I love Linda’s Perfect series, this one looks as amazing as the others 🙂

perfectlychristmas3_850

On the first day of Christmas, his true love said to him, “Sorry, I have to work.”

That’s the life of a surgeon, and Dr. Madison Hayes wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dr. Quinn Malone has another priority. In the countdown to Christmas, he needs to convince his old flame that there’s more to life – and love – than the job itself.

This time, his heart is in it for the long haul. Really.

Romantic and . . . complicated – it’s Perfectly Christmas!

Excerpt

Peggy, the clinic manager, stopped at the door. “Oh, one more thing. Did you want to be a part of the office secret Santa? We pick names out of a hat, and each day during the twelve days of Christmas, someone opens a gift.” She grinned. “Technically, we know, the twelve days of Christmas starts on December twenty-fifth, but we use it as a countdown to Christmas. We have a lot of fun with it.”

Madison hesitated. She wasn’t really big into exchanging presents. Stuff you didn’t need and wanted less. But Peggy was looking at her like it was the best thing ever.

Small town. Two years. Try to fit in. She sighed. She could always ask her sister for suggestions. “Okay, yeah. Sounds fun.” Translate stressful.

Peggy’s grin widened. “I’ll be right back.”

After a moment, Peggy returned carrying a Christmas bag. She shook it and paper rustled inside. “Here you go. Pick one, but don’t tell us.”

Madison held back a sigh, reached in the bag, and picked out a piece of paper.

She unfolded it and her heart sank.

Quinn Malone. Dec. 24.

Love’s in the Cards by Becky Lower

Becky Lower is here with her brand, shiny, new holiday release Love’s in the Cards. I’m reading this one now and it’s phenomenal!

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Blurb:

Penny Beedle’s outlook on Christmas, as her favorite holiday, was destroyed by a messy breakup years earlier and a botched wedding last year—both on Christmas Eve. But since she and her sister now own a greeting card store, and the holidays are their crazy selling season, she has to put on a happy face.

Del Madison has loved Penny since kindergarten. Commissioned by a big greeting card company for a line of Christmas and Valentine’s cards, he has to emerge from behind his alter ego and unveil himself to the public. He chooses Penny Beedle’s shop for the big reveal. If he plays his cards right, he just might gain Penny as part of his life.

Excerpt:

Penny sighed softly. Abbey made sense. They had to do everything possible to compete with the other shops, all chasing the same tourist dollars. Even if doing so meant having six-foot-tall nutcrackers flanking the door for the next six weeks. Penny’s eyes smarted with sudden tears, but she blinked them away quickly, telling herself the moisture merely came from a reaction to the cold weather. “I think we need new names for these boys, especially after last year’s debacle. I now have two reasons to despise the season.”

As she wiggled her nutcracker to his final position on one side of the entrance to their shop, Abbey grunted. “This is our make-or-break season, so your attitude has to shape up, Penny. I had hoped a year would give you enough time to get over last Christmas’s aborted wedding.”

Penny jerked her big statue a bit too hard to the left before she squared him with the frame. She bit her lip at the chastisement as she glanced at Abbey. Anyone could tell they were from the same family, with their dark hair, blue eyes, and slender builds. Often, they were mistaken for twins, even though Abbey had been born two years earlier. The only noticeable difference was Penny could sing in key, but Abbey had a tin ear.

“Even though I’m over both Max and Ricky, their betrayals still hurt. And the fact they both screwed up my Christmases makes me hate the season.”

“Well, if getting your head back on straight this year means we rename Hans and Gunther, let’s do so. What’d you have in mind?”

Penny squinted up at the lifelike plastic statues towering over them. “I don’t mind Hans, but I’ll name mine Solo, since that’s what I am.”

Abbey grinned and wrapped an arm around Penny. “Well then, may the force be with us as we head into our peak season. The weather’s finally turned cold, perfect for putting folks into the holiday gift-buying mood. Let’s get inside. I’ve got something exciting to show you.”

The Science of Baking

I read somewhere once that cooking is an art. It takes imagination and flare. But baking? Baking is a science. It takes exactitude and precision. It requires patience. It requires dedication. It requires love. A whole lot of love. And well…that’s what I’ve got…love…love for a girl, a special one, one who deserves dedication. So what do I choose to prove my love? I choose baking.

Chapter One

Lenn

Deep inside my tote, my hand grazed against my faithful sketchbook before I removed it. The metal spirals comforted my fingers as I dragged them across the row of sharp-edged rings. Firmly gripping the book, I flipped it open to a blank page near the middle. I smoothed out the slightly texturized, eggshell white page. I bent down and buried my nose in the crease, inhaling the faint lead pencil scent. It calmed me, readying me to add another chapter to my visual saga.

Spreading my tools around me, hard and soft pencils, a ruler, several firm erasers, and a small metal sharpener, I steadied my hand and cleared my mind, inviting in only the most blissful images of my fantasy. With a soft lead pencil, I constructed an oval blank for the face. Art classes definitely assisted in perfecting the technique, but dedication and talent trumped instruction.

I used the ruler to estimate the proper dimensions. I added eyes, a nose, some crazy-hot lips, all his beautiful features. I gave him expressive brows. I sketched his glossy dark brown hair, shaggy bangs flopping over to the side, covering his ear, exposing that sarcastic, twisted grin on his lips, the same way he looked when he joked around with his friends in the corner of the library during study hall.

A trusty eraser mopped up all of the stray, miscellaneous marks. I blew away a couple gummy shreds before I shaded in his taut jawline. I wiped up the last scattered pieces left behind on the page before I started on adding myself to the portrait. Duplicating the process, I gave myself a hipper, manga-esque look, allowing for a more whimsical likeness of myself.

Poppy and Kit sat at the same long, wooden table, on the opposite side of me. Kit swiped through the pages on her tablet, desperately trying to find the right page number, since she had neglected to tap the bookmark before closing out her chapter the previous night. Nervous oohs and aahs escaped her lips. Poppy, sitting with her legs crossed, jiggled her feet beneath her chair, shaking the table, creating a rattling earthquake under my artwork.

I shot a glare in her direction. “Would you please stop? The both of you! You are driving me crazy, and ruining my picture.”

Poppy and Kit stopped suddenly. They looked at each other, wide-eyed and innocent, two does in the midst of a meadow. Unaware! Clueless! Oblivious!

“I can’t think when you moan that way,” I snapped, addressing Kit. She squirmed underneath her oversized flannel shirt and baggy jeans.

“And, you,” I turned to Poppy. “You are going to smudge my drawing with all of that wild motion going on underneath the table. Can it!”

Their jaws dropped. They both stared at me, wordless.

“Please.” I hugged my journal protectively. Softening my voice, I turned to Poppy and asked her again. “Please?”

“Sorry,” they announced in simulcast, sighing, shrugging their shoulders, lost together in the great woods of their minds.

They looked back down at their own musings. I continued to draw.

In this picture, the two of us relaxed together on a chaise lounge, him with his large, bulbous headphones, and me with my skull and crossbones ear buds. Our eyes drifted in the opposite direction, lids almost closed, in a sleepy trance. My arm draped across his chest until our fingers entwined, intimately. We zoned out to his simpatico beats.
